Rationale

The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s final plays, and it tells the story of Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, who lives on a remote island with his daughter Miranda. Using his magical powers and the spirit Ariel, he conjures a storm to shipwreck his enemies, including his unreasonable brother Antonio and the King of Naples. Amid plots of rebellion from the island’s native Caliban and the blossoming romance between Miranda and Ferdinand, Prospero ultimately chooses forgiveness over revenge, freeing Ariel and preparing to return to Milan. The play explores themes of betrayal, power, love, and reconciliation, showing how storms can give way to peace.

The design approach was inspired by the books main themes, focusing on one poster being about the storm and shipwreck. Another poster reflects Prospero and shows how reconciliation changed him and took his magic away, but in the best way possible. Finally, the last poster shows the idea of “the eye of a storm” through metaphors in the book itself and images that reflect the main plot of the story. One of these was made through a collage, another through digital illustrations, and the last one is made entirely from cut and shapes pieces of paper made to look like waves, and a ship, and also includes hands, and these were all further vectorized.
